Dogs have been helping humans since nearly the beginning of time. From helping gather food during the BC era, to serving as security guards during the Renaissance, but always “mans best friend”. As we human evolve so do our pets.

Service animals have been helping disabled folks since the Americans with Disabilities Act was written in 1990. The Codes of Federal Regulation define a service animal as “any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including, but not limited to, guiding individuals with impaired vision, alerting individuals with impaired hearing to intruders or sounds, providing minimal protection or rescue work, pulling a wheelchair, or fetching dropped items,” According to Wikipedia.

A guide dog serves as the eyes for their human, guiding their blind handler around objects. These dogs remarkably navigate their human through traffic, stairs, uneven sidewalks, all while avoiding obstacles that would cause injury or harm.

A hearing dog serves as the ears for their human, responding and alerting to noises. Hearing Dog’s alert their handler to the doorbell, the phone, a baby’s cry, among other things, by moving towards the disabled human and then going to the source of the noise.

Two other types of service dogs are mobility assist dogs and walker dogs. A mobility assist dog helps with everything from picking up something for the handler to pulling a wheelchair, opening and closing doors, even getting dressed and undressed. While a walker dog simply acts as a lead for a person who has difficulty walking, they help maintain balance.

A seizure response dog can assist their human suffering from Epilepsy after a seizure. These dogs are trained to stay with their human after an episode to wait for help, and a few specially trained seizure response dogs know to hit a button calling 911 and barking when a human answers the line.

A therapy dog or psychiatric service dog helps calm their human with any mental disorders. These dogs help humans with fear of going into public or even autism. Just the mere presence of a dog helps calm someone with a disorder similar to these.

These dogs each serve a very specific and important function. Training these dogs takes considerable effort, and they can be costly to the human who requires a service dog. But the assistance that these dogs provide is invaluable and frankly quite impressive!

Let’s face it: we love our pets! In fact, many people consider them to be part of the family. But have you ever stopped to think who will take care of your beloved animal after you’re gone?

Of course, no one can care for Spot or Mr. Whiskers the way you do but if you’re suddenly no longer able to provide the care your pet needs, someone will have to step in and take over — now wouldn’t you like to have some control over who provides that care and more importantly, the kind of care they give?

Fortunately, there’s a way to do just that.

What is a pet trust?

A pet trust is a legal arrangement to provide for the care of a pet in the event of the pet owner’s death or disability. Many attorneys that handle trust law (wills, power of attorney, or estate law) also handle pet trust law issues. Also, there are companies that can be found on the Internet where an individual can set up a pet trust fund.

How does the trust work?

The pet owner sets aside money or property to a trusted person or a bank, legally referred to as the trustee. This trustee is responsible for making the arrangements for the proper care of your pet according to your instructions. The designated trustee will deliver the pet to the designated beneficiary (new caregiver). The money or the property you set aside in the trust will pay for the pet’s care and maintenance in the home of the new caregiver.

Actually there are two main types of pet trusts – the traditional trust and the statutory trust. The traditional trust is the most common; the statutory trust is not available in all states. However, if your state does not have a pet trust statute, you can still create a traditional pet trust. You can find out the trust statues in your state by looking on the internet.

With the traditional trust, the owner selects a trustee to help the person providing care for the animal by paying for all expenses related to the pet according to the deceased pet owner’s direction.

The statutory trust is more of a basic plan which does not require many decisions on the part of the pet owner. All the owner needs to do is put a provision in their will saying “I leave ‘X amount’ in trust for the care of my (dog/cat/etc.).”

Bottom line is that a pet trust fund will help secure your pet’s future.

As a senior, I can’t afford to take chances with my health by lifting heavy objects. It used to be that something as simple as feeding my cat was a real pain in the patootie. Bending down to lift a fifteen-pound bag of food was putting a real strain on my back, and it was hard to pour into the bowl. My life has been a lot simpler since I switched to a proper pet food storage container. Now I just pour the entire bag into my little kibble cubby on the shelf, where it stays fresh and safe until I need some.

Then I just use the scoop to fill up my cat’s bowl, and I’m all done. No risky or painful bending and lifting, and I’ve even noticed that Mr. Whiskers seems to enjoy his food more. And since I’m on a fixed income, I’m happy that I was able to order this great pet food storage container for such a low price.

But don’t think you have to be an old biddy like me to use a cat food storage container. Take care of your back while you’re young, and it’ll take care of you when you’re old. I may be old, and I might be married, but this isn’t just an old wives’ tale- pet food storage containers are a real solution to everyday problems.
